Pre & Perinatal Somatic Psychology: Supporting parents to build more connection in their family
While the midwifery model of care offers far more support for the emotional and spiritual aspects of growing a family than other models of care, appointments still primarily focus on the physical wellbeing of mom and baby. With two additional pre- and perinatal somatic psychology (PPN) sessions (ranging from 1.5-2 hours) offered in North Fork Midwifery package, parents have an opportunity to deepen their connections with each other; process what may be left over from their own births; prepare their older children for the arrival of a new sibling; integrate previous birth experiences; and more.
What is PPN?
PPN is a beautiful field that acknowledge the sentience we all had when we were in the womb; during our birth; during our early years; and also the sentience of our little ones. After learning this work from the inside out with her own family, Moriah has been weaving this highly attuned care into her midwifery practice since 2011. She now teaches this unique work to other midwives and birth professionals.
What are Imprints?
We all carry “imprints” that stem back to our early life and the way we experienced support and/or lack there-of during our preverbal development. These “imprints” influence the lens through which we live our lives and can impact how we form relationships and our basic belief systems around security, connection and love. As most of these imprints are laid down during preverbal development, they are stored in our right brain/implicit memory and in our bodies somatically
The intention of these sessions is not to “get rid of” these early imprints, but rather with connection and support explore, integrate, and re-pattern them in a way that helps clients connect with a deeper capacity for health and ease.
Some things explored in these sessions include:
The 8 Castellino Principles – tools for increasing connection within a family unit and beyond
Co-Regulation & Self-Regulation – understanding which one comes first developmentally and how to increase both
Implicit vs. Explicit memory – exploring how our early memories influence us currently
Blueprint vs. Imprint – identifying the health within ourselves, partners and family
Understanding how our early imprints effect our parenting patterns and choices
The in’s & out’s of the Autonomic Nervous System
An introduction to Layers of Support and how to bring more support into our lives
Tools to create differentiation for our babies and children at every stage
Tools to create differentiation for ourselves in relation to patterns from our families of origin
The value of integrating our own births and previous children’s births in the hopes that those patterns won’t repeat
Supporting babies to tell their birth story and integrate their birth
Explorations of supported attachment/the breast crawl
Studies show that the exploration and integration of our own birth and previous births can help us prepare for upcoming labors, and also decrease the likelihood of repeated trauma imprints.
These sessions offered by Moriah are not required in your care, although they are a huge added bonus for those interested.
